In 1903 the Utah Sugar Company completed their factory in Garland. Then they did something that many companies have failed to do, they gave back to the community. Among other things, they donated land to the LDS Church to construct a ward chapel. It was finally completed in 1914 at a cost of $55,000.
I'm planning on taking some photos of historic local buildings soon... It's almost a crime that a lot of buildings have been razed... or have fallen down. Many of the tabernacles around Utah don't exist anymore because they were replaced with more modern structures. It's too bad.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I think at one point there were about 44 in Utah, now its down to 22. The Lehi Tabernacle was actually, in my opinion, the coolest looking one. Provo's is also high on the list and I hope they decide to rebuild it. Although I really don't think they will.
ReplyDeleteWho knows. I think people appreciate the old buildings more these days... because there are fewer and fewer of them. There was a time when the Church either sold off or demolished the older buildings. Maybe the Provo fire will help to save other buildings.
